Tours of the Detroit Salt Mine

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have a tour of the mine?

No.

It is not the policy of the Detroit Salt Company to give public tours at this time nor in the forseeable future.

I understand that tours were offered in the past, why the change in policy?

Public tours were offered at a time when the mine was in a dormant state, with no excavation of salt in process..  The management company at that time allowed for such tours to occur.

The mine has had new leadership since the late 1990's.  As the mine was reactivated and excavation resumed, a no- tours policy was adopted.  This policy has been maintained since that time, and will continue in to the future.

Is there a waiting list that I can be placed on to tour the mine eventually?

No. There is no waiting list for tours.

Will there ever be a change in the current tour policy?

This policy was put into place to ensure the safety of all parties involved- including workers and potential guests.  There is no reasonable deviation of this policy that would accomodate public tours.
